Hi ,
Well here we are in November, and seemingly surprised that the seasons changed. We say things like, “can you believe it’s fall?” as if that doesn’t happen every year! Last night when our neighbors' kids came trick-or-treating at our house, we were somehow surprised that they were all a little bit taller than last year. Shockingly, time marches on! Yet somehow, when we fall in love with a charming 100 year old house, we are surprised to discover that it has a 100 year old foundation. Like how is this possible? The house has new light fixtures! It has a cute new paint color! Why isn't everything new forever? But also old and charming. And maybe at the home inspection we discover that some things actually are new, like maybe the owner of that adorable old house replaced the sewer line and put in a new HVAC system --- these are excellent surprises! We all know a brand new roof will not remain new forever, and the water heater I installed 10 years ago is now 10 years old and will need to be replaced again, but if the seller of the house you're buying replaced the roof recently, you should be pretty psyched that you will have many years without leaks! And along with that expensive new roof you get a lovely old home, with mature trees, in an established neighborhood, and you may be surprised at how valuable those things prove to be.
Last week my husband and I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary with a trip to Monterey and Carmel. We stayed at this adorable old inn across from the ocean in Pacific Grove, with beautiful wood ceiling beams and leaded glass windows, and guests who we learned come year after year for their anniversaries. I'm really glad we chose this place over the generic chain hotels, but let me tell you what a delightful surprise it was to find it had updated bathrooms!
So enjoy the happy surprises, including an extra hour of sleep this weekend and that amazing Dodgers World Series win! I watched the game with my dad, who had some wise words on the subject of surprises: "Anything can happen in baseball!"
