Tucked behind the Rancho Park Golf Course and to the west of the Hillcrest Country Club is the beloved Cheviot Hills. Its curving streets are lined with homes of varied historical and contemporary architectural styles, and its proximity to Fox and Sony studios makes it a common shooting location for many of your favorite TV shows and commercials. At the heart of the neighborhood is the Cheviot Hills Recreation Center, which is a hub of constant activity and includes a playground, a dog park, tennis courts, an archery range, a seasonal outdoor pool, basketball courts, baseball and soccer field, and picnic tables. It’s a great place to meet your neighbors and make new friends. Of course we all know that big show biz deals get made on the Rancho Park golf course, where anyone can play for just $12! After some activity, walk over to Pico Blvd and indulge in a hearty breakfast with famous biscuits at John O’Groats, or a gorgeous French tart across the street at Ludevine’s Pastry shop. Make sure to visit Children’s Book World, and all the shops and eateries along this stretch of Pico.
The neighborhood is actually a collection of multiple adjacent tracts developed by different companies between the 1920’s and 1950’s, and each one has a different architectural style. Early developers Franz Nelson & Sons named the neighborhood after the hills separating England from Scotland, and the streets were given the names of famous streets in Scotland. Monte-Mar Vista’s original homes include Tudor, Spanish Revival and Colonial styles, but now some have been replaced by large contemporary “farmhouse” styles. California Country Club Estates are mid-century styles including modern and ranch homes. Country Club Highlands off Pico BLVD is now known as Rancho Park, and includes many Spanish and traditional style homes, as well as some duplexes. Cheviot Hills is a beautiful neighborhood with excellent elementary schools and it’s so convenient in its central location.
